The basic structure of the Bachelor of Science in Nursing is comprised of two educational components, the lecture /theoretical component and the practical component referred to as the Related learning Experience. This is what other institutions often will refer to as the Internship program of the student nurses.
The RLE is generally defined as follows; The Related Learning experience is where the student nurses are fielded in different areas and wards, in hospitals supervised by the faculty of the St. Luke’s College of Nursing. The clinical duty/RLE is aligned to the particular topic /lecture that are being discussed in class during the semester. For instance given the nursing subject referred to as the Nursing Care management of the healthy mothers, family and children, the students are fielded in clinical areas in the hospital focusing on that type of care. In this case they would be working in the Obstetrics and/or the Maternal Child nursing wards for the RLE component.

To provide a balance of perspectives and in order to further enrich the exposure and training of the students, the College also utilizes their relations with government hospitals for the medical-surgical and paediatric nurse experience. The students will also go on duty to private birthing centers where they gain exposure in Obstetrics. For experiences in the care of the elderly, the students will work in a home care for the aged, managed by the clergy.
For more specialized training concepts such as Orthopaedic nursing, the students will work at the Phil Orthopaedic Center (POC). The student’s psychiatric experience will be fielded in the National Center for Mental Health(NCMH) and other related venues. Training in the management of infectious diseases will be held elsewhere also. Ultimately, St.Luke’s related learning experience is very hands on with regards to care of the patient, administering medications and interacting with the patient.
In this manner, we feel that The RLE program conceptualized by the St. Luke’s College of Nursing has allowed for the deepening and strengthening of the competencies of our students. Its varying programs and sites for clinical practices provides for varied experiences of the students which should help contribute to their overall professional development. Hopefully this will help to inspire them to be passionate about their work and service.
